When we were renovating our little house on the lake, we knew we wanted to keep the space as a place we could kick back and have a good time. I love a beautiful home, but if it doesn’t function for the way you live, then it really doesn’t work. Since we were working with only 500 sq ft in the main living area it was important to think about how things can work double duty.
I’m always hunting for furniture and decor that can add fun and functionality to our little retreat. These linen vintage bookshelf editions of classic board games look beautiful displayed on shelves and have all the classic components of the games stored nicely inside. Having them displayed and within reach makes it easy to grab off the shelf on a rainy lake day.

This oversized wooden tic tac toe is a fun way to add a game to an oversized ottoman or coffee table.

Originally I had big plans for this small awkward area (which was once the porch) to make it a beautiful beverage/snack area, but when my husband and daughter came home with these two arcade games we decided they would be perfect in this spot.

I normally wouldn’t agree to building a mini arcade right next to my living room but since our goal was to make the lake house laid back and fun I conceded. I didn’t love the aesthetic of the video game graphic on the sides of the machine so I covered them with stickers we had been collecting – and I love how it gives them a retro arcade vibe but also feels coastal-beachy.

In my continued hunt for fun and functional decor I have rounded up some classics that would be perfect not only for a lake house, but a finished basement, game room, play room or any place you want to infuse a little playfulness. One of my favorites is this foosball coffee table. Our girls have been asking for a foosball table at the lake but we clearly can’t fit a regular size table, this one is such a great fit for the space !

This checker/chess C table would make a great end table next to the couch but also great to pull out the game pieces from the drawer on a rainy day and play a game.
