We started this project back in the fall, with the intention of adding a full bathroom to our upstairs living space. You can read the funny way how it all started here and here. We decided on a jack-and-jill style bathroom that would have an entrance from the hall as well as our primary bedroom. Since we had to open the attic ceiling and extend the bathroom wall in about a 1′ 1/2″ into our bedroom, we decided it was a good time to renovate our bedroom to some extent as well. We ripped up the carpet and built a new wall. In addition, since we lost one of the windows we decided on a pocket door so we could leave it open (when not in use) to allow more light into our room. Here are a few before photos of the room and mid reno.
Even though the room is small, we decided to elevate the style of it by adding picture moulding to the walls. We first painted the walls Benjamin Moore Dove Wing in matte finish. We new what size our new bed frame as well as the height of the end tables would be so we mapped those out with painters tape and then decided where we wanted the boxes from there.
From there we were able to determine the size of the first middle large picture frame because we wanted to include the bed frame within that picture frame. We then spaced out the other box frames 4″ from there. We found it easier to use a laser level, painters tape and measuring tape when mapping it out.
We also created a 4″ spacer using scrap wood to make it easier to install the pieces evenly.
Each corner of the picture frame moulding was cut on a 45 degree angle using a miter saw.
We used a brad nail to hold the pieces in place.
Originally we were going to just do the wall behind the bed, but then decided it was best to do it on every wall, as we are not huge fans of accent walls.
Possibly an unpopular decision, but we decided on plush wall to wall carpet in the bedroom. We really wanted it to be comfortable and nostalgic of what we loved in the 80s as kids. We decided on Stainmaster from Lowes in the color Snowfall.
We actually have not finished the picture frame moulding and the base moulding in the entire room yet, because we still have not finished an electric fireplace area and the depth of that finished will determine the placement of the picture moulding on the adjacent wall.
This room is not finished or completely decorated yet – it’s a work in progress that we might not actually get to until after the summer, so stay tuned!
